Born in Soberton a the 5th child of Joseph and Eliza.
The 1871 census lists the family living on Liberty Road. At Age 13 (1981 census) he was working as a Labourer on Russel's Farm, Soberton for Henry Knight. Listed on 1891 census as Farmer's son, living at the Forest, Soberton with his father (and family).
By 1901 he had married Rosa, was living in the Poor Cottages on Inglefield Lane, Soberton with 2 sons (although the 2 boys had been born in Hambledon) and he was working as a Ground Labourer. The 1911 census lists him with 4 sons living at Whitedale Farm, Hambledon were he was a Farm Labourer.
The 1939 register lists him and Rosa living at Chapel Road, Soberton Heath, with his occupation listed as "Labourer Retired" and being of ill health. Next-door is his son Joseph William and his family.

His eldest son Joseph Longman is buried at Soberton St. Peter's, and his second son Thomas Longman died in WW1 and is commemorated on the Soberton War Memorial.
