He was born in Hambledon as the eldest son of Joseph and Rosa. The 1901 census lists the family living in the Poor Cottages on Inglefield Lane, Soberton, his father was a Ground Labourer. Strangely, he is listed as William (not Joseph). In 1911 the family was living at Whitedale Farm, Hambedon, where his father was a Farm Labourer. The 1939 Register lists him, Lavinia and their daughter Ruth living on Chapel Road, Soberton Heath, next-door to his father. Joseph is a Market Gardener (living on own means).
His brother Thomas Longman died in WW1
